It’s exciting to think of what’s in store for 2020. Although there are some things we can’t predict, we have a good idea of what interior design trends we can expect to see in the new year, based on current trends and sales figures.
Overall interior design trend prediction: “Countryside Chic”
The farmhouse look has had its moment in the sun. While we don’t anticipate this trend will go away in 2020, experts expect it to evolve into a more European-style, countryside home feel. This means we can look forward to mixing patterns and styles, such as antiques combined with new décor. These patterns often include whites and dark greys, along with muted primary colors. Botanicals will continue to be an inspiration as the farmhouse trend morphs.
Kitchen design trends
Practicality is the name of the game when it comes to kitchen 2020 trends. As our lives become busier, one of the most important rooms of the home will need to focus on functionality over fashion.
Granite and marble countertops that were trendy in the past will lose their luster due to the maintenance and upkeep required.
Faux marbles look so real that most won’t know it’s a reproduction, and we’ll see more and more of those installations in 2020. Quartz is a great alternative to granite or marble because it is durable and low maintenance.
Open shelving is also a thing of the past. People don’t have time to make their open shelving look beautiful — and keep it dust free!
Two-tone kitchens will replace the white kitchens we’ve seen recently — another maintenance choice. Black and white colors in the kitchen will be common.
Living room design trends
Another 2020 interior design trend affects the living room and other living areas, and that’s painting every single part of a room — from the ceiling and all four walls to the trim and light switch covers. Forget accent walls; if you love a color enough to cover a wall, go big and paint the entire room. Painting all the millwork and every surface will make your living areas feel chic and enveloping.
If you don’t want to go all in, consider painting interior doors with a deep, rich color to add warmth and character to your living room. Make sure you pair the door with great hardware to give the room an artistic element.
Dining room design trends
As living spaces become more open and fluid, many people are using their dining room for extended living rooms or even closets. There isn’t much use for a traditional dining room anymore, and homeowners are wanting to better utilize that extra space. We’ll see even more of this utilization in 2020. For those who do keep their dining rooms, dining tables are being replaced by comfortable upholstered chairs and lower tables. Reading lamps and other cozy elements are making dining rooms more conducive to a relaxing, “hanging out” atmosphere.
Bedroom design trends
Similar to the all-encompassing color of the living rooms, bedrooms are starting to see more big design takeovers on the walls and ceilings with wallpaper. The abundance of peel-and-stick wallpaper in fun and trendy designs has perfectly poised this interior design hit to become uber popular in 2020.
Only time will tell what 2020 will bring and what trends stick or will be gone again in a year.
