Find yourself with a little extra time on your hands recently? Perhaps you’re spending more time at home than you used to due to a tiny little thing called a worldwide pandemic. While you’re stuck at home, you might as well use this time to make some improvements to your home or tackle some projects that you always said you’d “get around to.” The beauty of these quarantine home projects is that you probably already have most of what you need to accomplish all nine, helping keep costs low.
1. Touch up your paint
You kept all those paint cans for a reason. Now is the perfect time to touch up the paint in your home that’s chipped or scuffed from normal wear and tear. Pay special attention to trim. A quick, simple trim touch up can really make your rooms look like new — and add to the value of your home.
2. Rearrange your furniture
Have you been thinking you might like the TV on the opposite wall? Keep running into a side table on your way to the kitchen? Now is the perfect time to rearrange your furniture and try different room layouts. Even just a minor switch — switching rugs or chairs from different rooms for example — can give you a fresh perspective.
3. Restyle your shelves
The same concept applies to your shelves, too. You don’t have to get new décor to freshen things up, just move them to different rooms. Look up some inspiration on boards like Pinterest and try styling your shelves a different way. You could arrange your books according to color, for example, or follow some feng shui principles.
4. Do some spring cleaning
It’s also a great time to do some spring cleaning, as well. You don’t have to Marie Kondo if you don’t want to, but you should take this time to donate or recycle items that are no longer of use. You should also use this time to do some cleaning or home maintenance that you have been putting off for a “rainy day.” We’ve covered spring cleaning checklists before. Here are a few:
5. Organize your closets/drawers
While you’re purging what you don’t need, seize this opportunity to organize your closets, drawers and other storage areas (yes, even the garage). No matter how well organized your home looks from the outside, you can always add some extra organization to the interior. Check out these home organizers for inspiration.
6. Hang that artwork
Have you had some photos or other art that you’ve been meaning to hang for a while? What are you waiting for? One good quarantine home project is to plan that gallery wall or hang the art you’ve had stuck in the closet. Since you have plenty of time staring at your walls, you can take some time and evaluate whether you have the proper placement. If you have hung all your artwork, consider rearranging it. Just like your furniture, this can give your rooms a new feel.
7. Update your photos
You probably have some photo frames that can be updated with more recent family photos. Especially if your family has added some members over the years, updating those is probably something you’ve been putting off for a while. Getting photos printed and mailed to you can easily be done from an app on your phone these days.
8. Begin yard work
It might not be time to start planting a garden or other vegetation in your yard just yet, but you can start preparations now. Pull weeds, prune bushes and do other prep work for when planting season begins.
9. Condition your items
Since now is the time to do all those tasks that often get neglected, conditioning your items definitely falls into this category. Here are just a few to consider:
Oil cutting boards
Condition leather sofa
Season cast iron skillets
Condition wood furniture
Addressing all these quarantine home projects should keep you busy for a little while, and we’ll be out of quarantine before we know it — with cleaner, better organized homes!
